Growing up, I was known as a great three-point shooter. Around my area I could score on almost anybody, and I thought that was all I needed.
Then in seventh grade I went to a camp with the best players on the East Coast, and I got exposed. I couldn't make a shot. I asked my coach what to do, and he said, "Jon, you've got to figure it out."
Most kids in that spot stop shooting and start playing not to mess up. I kept looking to make plays, and I played defense, which I was never known for. We won that championship.
My shot didn't go away because I forgot how to shoot. It went away because I had never learned how to play my game against players who were bigger and quicker than me.
The next year, in eighth grade, I averaged 30 points a game and got my first Division I offer. I wasn't a much better athlete. I understood the game.

That took me to a McDonald's All-American nomination, Division I college basketball and the NCAA tournament. Since 2014 I've trained players, and I see the same thing with almost every kid: the ones who play their best in games understand what the defense is doing and know what to do about it.
This playbook is how I teach that. For $27.
